Church of San Silvestro (Mels)

Friuli Collinare - Church of San Silvestro (Mels)
The first evidence of a long cult above the church hill date back to the 6th and 7th centuries: a Lombard necropolis surrounded by a fortification. The necropolis was abandoned until in the 13th century the Counts of Colloredo-Mels (The Waldsee Family) re-founded the small fortification.
The village was completely rebuilt, the necropolis razed to the ground and a church dedicated to San Silvestro was built which was consecrated, as we can learn from the archive of the Marquis Paolo di Colloredo, in 1356. It was immediately embellished with furnishings and enriched thanks to the numerous offers and land donations. The small church was managed by the fraternal of Sante Maria and Elena, based in the parish church of Mels.
