The church was originally built in 1516, already equipped with the baptismal font by a stonecutter from the school of Bernardino da Bissone which it still retains today. Over the course of six centuries the building has been expanded and restored several times, deconsecrated, and rededicated in 1867 by Archbishop Andrea Casasola. The last reconstruction works date back to 1976, following the earthquake.
